Royal Families

Kings and queens have been very important to the Abbey, beginning with King Edgar (reigned 959–75) who gave the original monastic community at Westminster lands covering most of what is now the West End of London. About a century  later King Edward (Edward the Confessor) made his palace close to this monastic community and built for it a large stone church which became his own burial place.  In the middle 13th century Henry III rebuilt the Confessor’s church, creating the Gothic building that's there today. King Henry’s own burial was in 1272 in his gothic cathedral. That established Westminster as the main royal burial place for the next 500 years.     Nowadays, Prince William of Whales and Kate Middleton (bottom left) will have their wedding at Westminster Abbey on Friday 29 April 2011. Prince William of Whales is the son of Princess Diana(bottom right). Princess Diana was a member of the British royal family and an international personality of the late 20th century as the first wife of Charles, Prince of Whales. She married him and had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. But tragically at the age of 36 she died of a horrible car accident in France. Some people say it was a plot murder by her husband, and some say the papparazzi made them crash.
