An architect by the name of William de Volpiano was the person who set the site of the cathedral and built it.The cathedral was built upon the granite tidal islet created through the passing of time. The actual building of the cathedral had to be supported by many different bases made by chambers and crypts. Buildings and houses were built through the years around the cathedral. The transept is set around the middle of the islet, and the cathedral towers over the surrounding small town. Its great spire that points to the heavens has St. Michael standing on the tip. The cathedral is known as both Romanesque and Gothic in it's design and structure. It's Gothic style abbey was created in the 13th century and is very famous because it is a world heritage site.
