Architects

Erwin von Steinbach

Erwin von Steinbach was Strasbourg's primary architect.  He worked on it from the year 1285 until he died, which was in 1318.  He designed and built the western facade, as well as the cathedral's rose window.  Steinbach had a wife named Husa.  They had one son, John.  Little other record remains of Steinbach's life, but he is remembered widely as a skilled architect.

Ulrich von Ensingen

Ulrich von Ensingen was born in Germany in 1350, and died in 1419.  He worked as an architect for many years, and was part of the construction of several of Europe's greatest constructions.  He helped with the design of the Sondergotik tower and west porch, and well as coming up with the base of Strasbourg's one tower.  Later in his life, he worked on the Frauenkirche, meaning 'our Lady', in Germany, as well as a convent in 1409.  He is only known to have had one child, a son also by the name of Ulrich.  One of these two is believed to have worked on the Milan Cathedral around 1394.  However, as the two share a name, it remains unknown as to which one it was.
