Laon was a very wealthy town in the year 1100 A.D.  When the people of Laon wanted to rule themselves, the King of France put Laon under Bishop Gaudry.  During the year of 1112, the people burned the bishop's palace and the cathedral of Laon.  They also killed Bishop Gaudry.  The Christians finally began building the apse of the new cathedral in 1160.  The fighting between the citizens and bishop continued until 1239, when they won their freedom.  During the French Revolution, the Laon cathedral was slightly damaged and was completed in the year 1914.  This cathedral also went through World War I unharmed.
