Bishop Murice Sully called for the old basilica of Saint-Entienne be remodeled into a cathedral in the Gothic style.  This would be a drastic construction project.  He wanted the cathedral to be over 416.6 ft (127 m) long and 131.2 ft (40 m) wide.  It would require complicated construction designs.  The plan was to make the surface of the Ile-de-la-Cite bigger by adding another small island beside it.  A huge sacristy was built in the town, which was altered to accommodate the building process.  A road to the cathedral was opened, mewasuring 19.6 ft (6 m) wide, dimensions almost unheard of during this time.
The floor plan of the cathedral included five aisles: a wide one through the central nave, doudle side aisles,  and a curved one that lead to the choir.  A sequence of chapels surrounded the side aisles.  The cathedral, like all gothic cathedrals at the time, was a cruciform floor plan.  This means that the cathedral is in the shape of a cross.  Aerial view photos show this dynamic shape.
