Rouen cathedral's three dominant external features are  three towers.  The first is Tour Saint-Roman, which was built in 1145.  The second, the Tour de Beurre, was built in the 15th century and is 151 m (250 ft) tall.  The last tower, the Tour Lanterne was built in 1876 and it contains a carillon of 56 bells.  It is made of 740 tons of iron and bronze, and it is about 150m (500 ft) tall.
The left portal, the Porte St-Jean, is a survivor from the 12th century early gothic period. The tympanum enacts the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist.
The main door, Porte Central, is decorated with statues showing the Family Tree of Jesus. The right portal, the Porte St-Etienne, is dedicated to St. Stephen, the first martyr.
